The City of Malé in the Maldives

Male-Maldives

The Maldives is a group of 1199 coral islands cast adrift in the Indian Ocean about 435 miles southwest of Sri Lanka. It is a popular tropical island destination for couples and those looking for a laid-back beach vacation. The snorkeling and diving in the turquoise waters is superb. It is the smallest country in Asia, in terms of population, and the smallest Muslim nation in the world. It is also the flattest country, with a high point of just 2.4 meters (7 feet 9 inches) on Addu Atoll. Understandably, talk of rising sea levels is of concern to the survival of these delightful islands.

The capital and largest city is Malé which is located on the southern edge of the island in the Kaafu Atoll. Traditionally it was the King’s Island where the palace was located and from where the royal dynasties ruled. Originally it was a walled city with fortifications and gates but most of these features were destroyed after the abolition of the monarchy in 1968. There is a commercial harbor, expanded through land reclamation, and a waterfront district. Most hotels are located on nearby islands a short boat ride away. The islands are warm and sunny all year round and the dry season from December to April is the busiest time of year.

Best Time to Visit

December to April. This is the dry season.

Estimated Price

Pricing is based on a 7 day, 7 night trip to the destination, departing from Portland, Oregon (my home town), choosing the cheapest room and airfare options. It is possible that you can find a cheaper price, or that you may need to choose different options that may increase the price. This also does not include car rentals, food costs, activity costs or any other charges you may incur while on the trip. This is meant to be an average, so you can get some sort of an idea what a trip like this costs.

Lodging for 7 days during “best time to visit”: $250 a night x 7 = $1,750

Round trip airfare from Portland, Oregon, USA = $2,217 per person x 2 = $4,434

Total: $6,184

Essential Experiences

Submarine Trip

The Whale Submarine Trip is a pleasant change from the more routine diving and snorkeling trips which are offered around Malé. The fixed submarine site is between Malé and Vilingili and is reached by boat. Visitors sit in the submarine with great views from the large portholes and the submarine descends about 100 feet (30meters). Excellent views of the site including whale sharks, giant grouper, turtles and conger eels can be enjoyed in the 40 minute dive.

Hukuru Miskiiy (Old Friday Mosque)

This is the oldest mosque in the country and was established during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar I in 1656. It is worth visiting for its intricate wood carvings, domed ceilings and fine lacquer work. The soft coral stone out of which the mosque was built, is beautifully carved with Arabic script and ornamental designs. There are various old tombstones of former sultans, nobles and heroes set around the compound.

National Museum

This is one of the main attractions in the Maldives. Located in the Sultan Park it is in part of the former Sultan’s Palace. As well as being in an interesting building, the museum has a valuable collection of exhibits which show the history and culture of the islands. It was opened in 1952 by the Prime Minister and has a fine collection of costumes from former royalty, ornaments which belonged to the Sultans, manuscripts, arms and armour, photographs and anthropological objects.

Maldive Victory

More than just a dive, the Maldives Victory Wreck is a 110 meter long cargo ship which sank in 1981. Now nicely established and covered with hard and soft corals it is a fascinating underwater experience but due to the strong currents it is not suitable for the novice diver. There is a shot line from the main mast to the deck at a depth of 27 meters and you can drop into the hold for the maximum permitted depth of 30 meters where there is plenty to see. Swim through the cabins with shoals of fish and enjoy this fascinating and unique experience.
