The Tahiti Islands

Tahiti is the epitome of the French Polynesian islands. Set in the southern Pacific Ocean it is the largest island in this remote archipelago known as the Society Islands. Lush rainforest covers the volcanic mountain slopes which descend into still blue-water lagoons. Exotic flowers and fruits grow in abundance in this tropical paradise and the natives are gentle, smiling and friendly.

The island of Tahiti measures just 45km at its widest point and it climbs steeply to 2241m at Mount Orohena, its highest point. It is perhaps best known for the tales of Captain Bligh and his crew who spent some months on the island in 1789 prior to the Mutiny on the Bounty. The official language on Tahiti is French and the official currency is the French Pacific Franc which is linked to the euro. The island’s economy is dependant upon tourism and the 118 Tahiti Islands together attract over 210,000 visitors each year. Tahiti exports black pearls, vanilla, fruit, flowers, coconut oil and fish.

Tahiti is known for its volcanic ‘black’ sand beaches where surfing is enjoyed. Inland, hiking trails lead through the jungle to refreshing waterfalls. Some of the cultural heritage of Tahiti can still be seen in the ‘otea’ dance which involves grass skirted dancers making hip-shaking movements accompanied by drums and music.

Best Time to Visit

The drier, cooler months are from June to October. July may also be a good time to visit for the Heiva Tahiti festivities.

Estimated Price

Pricing is based on a 7 day, 7 night trip to the destination, departing from Portland, Oregon (my home town), choosing the cheapest room and airfare options. It is possible that you can find a cheaper price, or that you may need to choose different options that may increase the price. This also does not include car rentals, food costs, activity costs or any other charges you may incur while on the trip. This is meant to be an average, so you can get some sort of an idea what a trip like this costs.

Lodging for 7 days during “best time to visit”: $200 a night x 7 = $1,400

Round trip airfare from Portland, Oregon, USA = $2,128 per person x 2 = $4,256

Total: $5,656

Essential Experiences

4WD Inland Tour

The best way to discover the mountainous interior of the island is by taking an organized tour in a sturdy 4X4. Explore the lush greenery of the tropical valleys and visit impressive waterfalls which plunge into crystal clear pools.

Island Cruise

Tahiti is the largest of the 118 islands which make up the Society Islands. Treat yourself to a scenic overnight cruise to see more of this idyllic area. Watch the sunset on the horizon and if you are really lucky you will see the ‘green flash’ as it disappears. Once the evening colors fade into darkness, enjoy the peace and solitude of the ocean. Dine beneath the stars and be rocked to sleep by the waves.

Archaeology

Some of the most famous petroglyphs (ancient carved signs on rock) are on the Island of Tahiti. The shapes of turtles and motifs are clearly visible but so far the meaning has not been deciphered. Tiki are roughly carved figures and Polynesians believe the statues have powers and they revere and fear them. Many of these sights can be discovered on an archeological tour of the island or visit Huahine near the capital, Papeete.

Traditional Dance Show

Polynesian culture is vibrant and colorful. Watching a local dance show is a great way to see the dancers depicting the sea or fish accompanied by local music and drumming.

Museum of Pearls

The Musée de la Perle Robert Wan is a great place to learn about pearls. Named after Robert Wan, who pioneered the pearl industry back in the 1960s, the museum shows the history of pearls back to antiquity, the method of creating cultured pearls and what to look for when buying a pearl.

Places to Stay

Intercontinental Resort Tahiti

Located in Faaa, 5 miles west of Papeete, this is considered the best all-round resort on Tahiti. It offers a choice of room standards but the best are the overwater stilted bungalows with private patios, marble bathrooms and canopied beds. Two large pools but no beach here.

Le Royal Tahitian, Papeete

Lovely pool, garden and its own black sand beach. Exceptional service and good live entertainment in the bar.

Manava Suite Resort, Papeete

Newer than most hotels on Tahiti with well equipped kitchenettes. Close to local restaurants. Great pool and lagoon for swimming.

Hilton Hotel, Papeete

Clean, comfortable and spacious with a lovely pool area, but perhaps a little dated in style.

Radisson Plaza Resort

Located on Matavai Bay, 4 miles east of Papeete. Excellent amenities beneath the thatched roof complex include a restaurant, spa, library and crafts center. The best rooms have hot tubs on the patio!
